Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a hybrid crossbreed of Labrador Retriever and Poodle that originated in Australia. Often bred as service dogs, Labradoodles combine the intelligence and trainability of the Labrador Retriever with the low-shedding coat of the Poodle. These designer dogs are considered to be one of the smartest and most loyal breeds, with their ability to make strong bonds with their owners and their enthusiasm for exercise and play. Labradoodles come in a variety of sizes and coats and are ideal family dogs, as they are great with kids of all ages.
The Labradoodle coat varies depending on the genes from their parents. Generally, they have short to medium length fur that is soft and fluffy. Much like a regular Poodle, their fur can range from straight and flat to shaggy and curly. They may even have a wavy coat and a well groomed grooming is important to maintain their coat. Their coat colors vary as well, ranging anywhere from shades of black, brown, and tan to white, red, and gray.
Labradoodles are versatile dogs and have unique dietary needs. Generally speaking, they should be fed a diet that includes quality dog food made from real ingredients, like meats and vegetables, and limited amounts of grains and carbohydrates. You'll want to make sure the food you feed your Labradoodle contains enough calcium, protein, and other key nutrients which can help keep them healthy and active. You may also want to consider adding supplements like omega-3 fatty acids and other vitamins to their diets for extra nutrition.
Before getting a Labradoodle, it is essential to provide them with the proper supplies they need for a healthy and comfortable life. When readying for your new puppy, you'll want to have a few basic essentials, including a sturdy leash for walks, and a comfortable collar or harness. Quality food and water bowls will also be necessary, as will a good quality dog food. You should have a brush or grooming tool to keep your Labradoodle's hair in good condition, and a good quality pet shampoo.
Labradoodles are usually classified as medium-sized dogs, though they can range in size depending on the parents. An average Labradoodle stands between 15 to 24 inches at the shoulder, and weigh between 45 to 85 pounds. However, some Labradoodles may reach a larger size due to their breeding, with some measuring up to 27 inches and weighing up to 90 pounds. While they may be larger than some other breeds, Labradoodles do not typically reach the size of 'big' dogs such as Great Danes or Newfoundland breeds.
Labradoodles are indeed very active and energetic dogs. They are highly intelligent, so they need regular mental and physical stimulation to ensure their minds and bodies stay healthy. They are natural athletes and highly intelligent, so can excel in activities such as agility and flyball. Labradoodles also make fantastic jogging companions, and they are also excellent swimmers. As any owner of a Labradoodle can tell you, these dogs need plenty of exercise, and it’s essential they get at least one good, long walk every day to keep them healthy and content.
Labradoodles tend to do very well with kids, often displaying great patience and gentleness. They are an intelligent breed that enjoy playful interacting and can be very patient when kids try to imitate their behaviors. Labradoodles enjoy the physical contact that comes with playing with children, and generally show great enthusiasm and energy when in the presence of children. Labradoodles are an easy going breed that thrive when surrounded by family members, especially children, and make a great household companion.
Training your Labradoodle begins with setting up boundaries for the pup and making sure that all family members are consistent in their expectations. Start by teaching your pup basic obedience commands such as ‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘stay’. Positive reinforcement, such as treats or verbal praise, is essential for successful training. Taking your pup for regular walks or runs in parks or open spaces is also a great way to bond and train your pup as it encourages more precise walking and general obedience.
