Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a mixed breed dog resulting from crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle. These dogs tend to be friendly, intelligent, and easily trainable. Labradoodles have a range of sizes, from miniature (under 15lbs) to standard (60+ lbs), depending on the size of the parent breeds. As a result, Labradoodles have a wide variety of physical characteristics, but they tend to have an easy-to-care-for wavy coat and an energetic personality. They are loyal, loving, and great companions for families.
The chances of someone with allergies being affected by any type of dog breed, including Labradoodles, depend completely upon the individual and their specific sensitivities. Most people with allergies are particularly susceptible to pet dander, which is the number one allergen from animals. The good news is that Labradoodles are bred to have low levels of dander and good grooming habits help to keep those levels even lower. People concerned about their allergies should always ask their healthcare provider for advice specifically related to their individual condition.
Labradoodles generally require nutritionally balanced diets, just like any other breed of dog. A good Labradoodle diet should consist of proteins such as lean meats, poultry, fish, and eggs; carbohydrates like whole grains; fruits and vegetables; healthy fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, and avocados; and essential vitamins and minerals. Additionally, owners should provide their Labradoodle with chew treats or rawhide chews as an extra way to satisfy their need for chewing.
Preparing your home ahead of time for your new Labradoodle is an important part of welcoming them into your family. Firstly, make sure that all harmful objects such as cleaning products, tools, and small/sharp objects are stored properly and out of reach. Secondly, Puppy-proof your home as much as possible by providing chew toys, removing potential hazards, blocking access to stairs and off-limits areas, and adding doggy gates if necessary.
Labradoodle puppies generally reach full-sized adulthood at around a year old. The size of your Labradoodle puppy will depend largely on its parents' and grandparents' size. Many Labradoodles weigh an average of 25-45 pounds, but this can range from as little as 10 pounds to as much as 50 pounds. Generally speaking, males are larger than females, but there are some exceptions and the size can vary between breeders. Some Labradoodles also have a longer coat and will appear to be bigger than their leaner counterpart even if they weigh the same.
The amount of exercise that you should provide your Labradoodle with depends on their age, health, and individual activity level. Generally speaking, you should aim to give your Labradoodle about 30-60 minutes of exercise every day. This can be a combination of a walk, a run, an outdoor game, or simply some quality play time. Depending on your Labradoodle's physical needs, you may be able to break up the exercise throughout the day and use activities that further your Labradoodle's mental stimulation, like interactive toys or hunt and retrieve games.
Labradoodles can make for great first-time owners, as they have a playful temperament and are quick-learners. They are highly trainable and can easily pick up new skills; plus they are highly energetic and love attention, so they can help new owners learn too. Additionally, they are generally hypoallergenic which could be beneficial to certain households. Labradoodles generally form strong connections with their owners, so they are great dogs for companionship. They also do not bark as often, and overall have a gentle demeanor.
Labradoodles have achieved quite a reputation for being very smart dogs. They are highly trainable and intelligent, as evidenced by their being employed as service dogs by the disabled. Many Labradoodles have excelled in activities such as agility and obedience competitions. An owner needs to use positive reinforcement training methods when working with Labradoodles as they are quite sensitive. Labradoodles can quickly learn commands and even understand an owner's body language. Beyond intelligent, Labradoodles are also great family pets and thrive on being around their human family.
