Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a popular and unique breed of dog bred to combine the intelligence of a Labrador Retriever with the ease of care of a Poodle. Labradoodles have soft, hypoallergenic coats and are often good for people with allergies. Furthermore, Labradoodles have gentle and agreeable temperaments and are easy to train and housebreak. They are relatively low-maintenance and surprisingly resilient to cold weather. Additionally, Labradoodles may have a higher energy level than the average dog and may require extra exercise to keep them from becoming over-active.
Labradoodles are often known for their non-shedding coat, but this can vary by individual dog. Breeder selection and attention to their coat care routine are also important considerations. It's not guaranteed that a Labradoodle will be non-shedding, but there are some goal-bred Labradoodle families who have begun to focus on this trait. In general, these families produce dogs with a coat that "blocks" out the shedding.
Labradoodles are an incredibly intelligent and active breed, and like all dogs, they require a balanced diet full of essential nutrients and minerals to maintain their health. Because of their digestible sensitivities, it is important to take extra precautions when it comes to what Labradoodles can and cannot eat. The key to keeping your Labradoodle healthy is to limit their intake of human food and to avoid high-fat, toxic or processed snacks.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Labradoodle isn't something that can be accomplished overnight, but there are some steps you can take to ensure you are giving your pup the best care possible. First, allocate regular and ample amounts of time for your Labradoodle; whether it's for playtime, training, or simply to provide the necessary attention and love your pup needs. Remember to remain consistent with your pup's scheduled activities; this will provide a sense of security and trust for your pup. Next, feed your pup nutritionally sound meals.
Labradoodles are considered to be medium and/or large-sized dogs. The American Kennel Club recognizes them as having a "medium" coat type. They range in size from 17 to 24 inches at the shoulder, and generally weigh between 45 and 75 pounds. While Labradoodles are often considered to have a lot of energy and agility, their size means that they can also be a good companion for an apartment or small living space. They can, however, require more exercise and attention than some smaller breeds.
Labradoodles are active, eager-to-please dogs that tend to love the water. Many Labradoodle owners report their canine companions gladly take the plunge into any pool, lake or river they're presented with. They are highly capable swimmers with an excellent aptitude for doggy-paddling, and the breed's non-shedding coat ensures that your Labradoodle won't be dogged by heavy waterlogged fur during your swims.
Labradoodles are highly intelligent and have a reputation for being an excellent family pet. They typically get along very well with children, as they are known for their social, friendly, and playful nature. Labradoodles are eager to please and have the capacity to form strong bonds with those around them. This makes them an outstanding pet for an active household, as they love to be involved in all of the family's activities. As a Golden Retriever and Labrador mix, Labradoodles are also known for having a relaxed demeanor, as well as being loyal and devoted companions.
Training your Labradoodle is an important part of having a well-behaved pup! Start by having a consistent routine and setting clear expectations of behavior. It's especially important to properly socialize your pup during the first 16 to 20 weeks of life. Teaching basic commands, such as “sit” and “stay” as early as possible will help make your pup more obedient and better behaved. You can also use positive reinforcement to reward your pup when they exhibit good behavior. Rewards such as treats, verbal reinforcement, and praise are all good ways to reinforce wanted behaviors.
