Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are increasingly popular among dog owners not only for their friendly demeanor, but their intelligence and hybrid vigor. A cross between the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle, they make excellent family pets and service animals. Fun facts about Labradoodles include that they are hypoallergenic, easy to train, and require minimal grooming. They are energetic, adore outdoor activities, and are great with children.
Labradoodles have a low to non-shedding coat depending on the genetics of the parent breeds. These crossbreeds can inherit the coat of a Labrador Retriever, which does shed, or the coat of a Poodle, which does not. Generally, Labradoodles with a wavy to curly coat tend to have lower shedding tendencies; straight-coated Labradoodles may not be as non-shedding. Labradoodles may also have coats made up of a mixture of the two, in which case the amount of shedding varies from dog to dog.
Labradoodles are intelligent, active dogs who need the right food and nutrition to stay healthy. Generally speaking, you should avoid feeding them table scraps, sugary foods, or overly salty snacks like chips. Additionally, you should be mindful of food allergies and digestive issues. AIrmly avoid feeding Labradoodles anything with high fat content or foods containing artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, or sweeteners such as candy or gum.
Preparing your home for your new Labradoodle is essential! First, make sure you have basic dog supplies such as food, bowls, and a leash. Secondly, it's important to secure any potential escape points or dangerous elements in your home such as open doors, electrical cords, toxic plants, and chemicals that are out of reach to your pup. Next, designate an area for your pup such as crate, bed or kennel. Finally, make sure you have interactive toys that will help keep your pup mentally and physically stimulated. Enjoy the new addition to your home!
The size of your Labradoodle puppy will depend on their heritage. Generally, Labradoodles can range from medium-sized (with Miniature Poodles and Labrador Retrievers) to large (with Standard Poodles). Within each size range, there can be a slight variance in adult weight, but the average size of a Standard Labradoodle is 22-24 inches at the shoulder and weighs 50-65 pounds. Miniature Labradoodles, on the other hand, usually are 14-16 inches tall and weigh 15-25 pounds.
The amount of walking time your Labradoodle needs every day can vary based on its individual energy level and age. However, a general rule of thumb is that you should provide your Labradoodle with at least 30 minutes of walking each day. Additionally, you should also aim to provide your Labradoodle with access to a dog-safe area where it can explore and play for at least an additional 20 minutes per day. This could be in the form of a walk around the park, a game of fetch, or a fun romp with another pup.
Labradoodles are generally known to be an excellent companion for any household, especially one with children. They are usually self-assured, smart, and non-aggressive, which makes them perfect for entertaining small children. Their temperament is usually very even-keel and they are known to be loyal and affectionate with family, particularly children. Labradoodles are also known to be vigilant watchdogs with a strong instinct to protect their family, keeping kids safe from harm. They are also amenable to training which makes them perfect for teaching kids to be gentle and responsible dog owners.
It depends on a number of factors such as age, temperament, and prior experience with training. As a general guide, it is suggested that Labradoodles receive a minimum of 10 minutes of dedicated training time per day. This could include activities such as teaching basic commands or introducing tricks, or simply providing mental stimulation like puzzle toys or teaching them to interact positively with people and other animals. However, if you have an older Labradoodle or one with prior behavior issues, you should up the minimum training time accordingly since it will take more concentrated effort to resolve the issues.
