Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a hybrid breed, created by crossing a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. As a result, they have a mix of traits from both parental breeds, making them an incredibly agile and energetic dogs that make wonderful family pets. They are intelligent, friendly, and sociable, and they love being the center of attention. Labradoodles have wavy, low-shedding fur and don't need a ton of grooming, which makes them ideal for those with allergies.
Labradoodles often have the reputation of being a low to non-shedding breed, but the truth is that they can have a wide range of shedding levels depending on their coat type. Some Labradoodles are hypo-allergenic, meaning that their coats strands are so thin that they don't allow for much shedding, and they don't affect those with allergies. Other Labradoodles have thicker hair strands, so they will shed more often and require regular brushing and grooming to stay non-shedding.
Labradoodles should not be fed chocolate or any other food products containing it. Additionally, they should not be given any food with a high fat content, such as pork, since it can increase the risk of pancreatitis. Nuts should also be avoided, due to their risk of causing an obstruction in the intestines. Grapes, raisins, and other fruits, as well as rawhide and other chews, can also be dangerous and should not be offered.
Before getting a Labradoodle, it is important to have the essentials on hand that will provide for them and ensure a safe environment. This includes providing a high-quality, age-appropriate dry food diet for nutrition; toys for mental stimulation and a healthy outlet for energy; a comfortable and inviting bed; a collar, harness, and leash; appropriate grooming supplies; stain and odor remover for any accidents; interactive training tools, such as puzzle feeders and training treats; an identification tag with your contact information; and a crate for a den-like environment.
Labradoodles come in a variety of different sizes, ranging from the miniature or toy size which typically weigh between 10-15 lbs, to the medium size which generally weighs between 21-29 lbs, and then the standard size Labradoodle which can range from 40-65 lbs or more. Regardless of the size, all Labradoodles are a mix of the Labrador Retriever and some type of poodle, usually a Standard, Miniature, or Toy Poodle.
Labradoodles are an active dog breed that enjoy spending time with their owners and being involved in lots of activities. They are enthusiastic and love running around and playing, making them great pets for active households. They have bundles of energy that needs to be used and so a good daily walk and lots of play time is necessary for them to stay healthy and content. If they are not given adequate exercise, Labradoodles may become bored and frustrated, resulting in destructive behaviors. This is why providing them with plenty of mental stimulation and physical exercise is very important.
Labradoodles can make excellent pets for first-time owners, depending on the person's lifestyle and expectations. They are typically very social and gentle, making them good with children and adults alike. They are also highly intelligent and eager to please, which makes them easy to train. In addition, Labradoodles possess a high degree of energy, so they require regular daily exercise to stay healthy and fit.
The amount of training a Labradoodle requires depends on the individual dog. Generally speaking, Labradoodles need at least 30 minutes of structured training per day, with additional exercise such as walks and playtime throughout the day. It's important to start training your Labradoodle as early as possible so they understand how to behave in various environments and how obedience works. You can increase the amount of time spent on training gradually. Training every day for longer than an hour is not necessary unless you want your Labradoodle to compete or specialize in training.
