Labradoodles are a hybrid breed, the development of which started in 1988 in Australia. They are a combination of the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle, resulting in an all-around family friendly dog of medium size. Labradoodles are intelligent, easy going, and devoted family dogs. They have an eagerness to please that makes them adept at learning tricks, and they don’t need an excessive amount of exercise either. It’s no surprise that Labradoodles are a popular breed choice, and make great companions for both children and adults alike.
Labradoodles have a unique hypoallergenic quality as they are a hybrid breed made with crossing a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. Due to the mix of both a Labrador and a Poodle, a Labradoodle is believed to have a lighter shed and is considered low-shedding to non-shedding. This means that often times those who are typically allergic to dogs can be around a Labradoodle and not experience harsh allergy symptoms.
Labradoodles should not be fed overly greasy or fatty foods, as these can upset their tummies and cause gastrointestinal issues. Things such as chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol should also be off-limits as these are potentially toxic for dogs. Additionally, food that contains sugar, salt, and spices, as well as raisins and grapes, are unhealthy for Labradoodles and should be avoided. Similarly, processed human foods or table scraps, which are high in fat, are not suitable for Labradoodles either.
To prepare your home for a new Labradoodle, start by making sure that your home is safe for them. Check for any sharp objects, toxic items, and dangerous cords that the pup may get into. Labradoodles are not uniformly considered small dogs. The size of a Labradoodle can vary significantly depending on which of the two parent breeds it is crossed with, a Labrador Retriever or a Miniature Poodle. Labradoodles that are bred from a Labrador and Miniature Poodle parents may reach sizes of anywhere from 14 to 24 inches tall, and generally weigh between 40 -65 pounds full grown.
Labradoodles need plenty of exercise to keep them healthy and happy! An adult Labradoodle generally requires at least 2 hours of physical activity a day, broken up into multiple smaller sessions. This could include a morning and afternoon walk, play sessions with toys, and even some obedience training exercises. Depending on their energy level, some individuals may require more. To stay healthy, Labradoodles also need appropriate mental stimulation such as puzzle toys, food puzzles, and interactive games. If you can, try to keep them in an active environment with plenty of opportunities for fun and play.
