Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a combination of two amazing, intelligent breeds Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. These designer dogs have the best of both worlds; they are sociable, affectionate, and possess the intelligence and easy trainability of poodles combined with the loyalty and enthusiasm of Labradors. Labradoodles are known to be low-dander, making them hypoallergenic and a great option for those with pet allergies. They are generally a healthy breed but, as with any other breed, they should be taken to the vet for regular checkups.
Labradoodles, a popular hybrid which is a mix of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, can be hypoallergenic depending on the coat type. Some Labradoodles are bred to have a low-shedding coat, while others can have a higher-shedding coat and not be considered hypoallergenic. If a Labradoodle is considered hypoallergenic, this could be due to the Poodle in its ancestry, as most Poodle coats are low-shedding and hypoallergenic.
Feeding your Labradoodle should be tailored to their individual nutritional needs and age. In general, it's important to choose a high-quality dry food that has been formulated specifically for large breeds with lots of energy. Look for a brand with wholesome protein sources such as fish, chicken and lamb, combined with healthy fats like flaxseed and olive oil, and plenty of vitamins and minerals. As they grow, it's important to raise calorie consumption in order to meet puppy nutritional requirements.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Labradoodle requires having a clear understanding of their behavior and needs. Be sure to do your research to learn what all Labradoodles need such as nutritious food, daily exercise, contact with other people and animals, proper training, and regular grooming. Once you understand the basics of their needs, you can begin to be more creative in how you meet their every day needs. This may involve getting creative with their training, finding new ways to create games and activities that are mentally stimulating, and being proactive about addressing any concerns immediately.
Labradoodles come in a variety of sizes, based on the type of coat, breed, and parents. Generally, Labradoodles have a combination of Poodle and Labrador Retriever parentage, producing a wide range of sizes. The smallest size Labradoodles are usually a combination of a Toy or Miniature Poodle and a Labrador Retriever, resulting in a Miniature or Medium Labradoodle. Medium Labradoodles are the most common size, ranging from roughly 15-20 inches in height and 20-40 pounds in weight.
Labradoodles generally have a great affinity for the water and can prove to be excellent swimmers. Due to their Labrador Retriever heritage, Labradoodles possess a natural love of swimming and can be seen enjoying a dip in the pool, lake or beach. They are highly energetic, making them well-suited for owners looking for an active companion for outdoor activities, and swimming is always a favoured pastime of many Labradoodle owners.
Labradoodles are an increasingly popular choice for family pets due to their affectionate, obedient, and friendly nature. These dogs make wonderful companions for all ages--they have the playfulness of the Labrador Retriever and the small size, intelligence, and trainability of the Poodle. They are highly social and typically very gentle with children and other pets. Furthermore, Labradoodles have an abundant amount of energy, making them wonderful running partners. They thrive when given adequate daily physical and mental exercise and stimulation, otherwise, they can become destructive.
Training a Labradoodle requires a commitment to consistency and patience, as well as the use of reward-based training. Start by teaching basic commands such as Come, Sit, Down, and Stay. Positive reinforcement is ideal, using treats and praise. To make the biggest impact, keep commands and corrections in simple terms, and choose a command word that's easy to remember and recognize. When introducing a command, verbally repeat it and use hand signals if applicable. Once your Labradoodle understands the command, repeat it often.
