Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a cross between two breeds of dogs, the Labradors and the Poodles, resulting in a hybrid breed that offers attributes of both. These dogs are known for their intelligence, low-maintenance coat and family-friendly demeanor, making them an excellent choice for pet owners.
Labradoodle coats are much different than any traditional breed of dog. They can vary in color, texture, and length, and are usually a combination of the Labrador Retriever and Poodle. Some Labradoodles have a "fleece" coat that is wavy or curly, while others can have a more traditional Labrador Retriever type of coat that is short, smooth, and dense. Regardless of the type of coat, the Labradoodle's fur is typically low shedders or nonshedding, making them an ideal breed of dog for those with allergies.
It is best to avoid feeding Labradoodles certain human foods and processed dog foods as they can be unhealthy. Instead, you should feed your Labradoodle a diet of lean, low-fat proteins like fish, chicken, or turkey, along with fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains like brown rice, oatmeal, and quinoa. Avoid feeding them any kind of table scraps or human junk food, such as candy, chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes or raisins, which can be toxic to them.
Preparing your home for a new Labradoodle is an important step in creating a safe and comfortable environment for your pup. Before bringing home your new pup, do a thorough investigation of your house and make sure it is safe and secure. Inspect for any potential hazards for a young pup, such as stairs, windows, electrical cords, or small items that could be a choking hazard. Additionally, block off any access to rooms that need to remain puppy-free until he is housebroken.
Labradoodles vary in size depending on the mix of parent breeds; those bred from a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle are considered to be medium-sized dogs, ranging between 21 inches and 24 inches in height and weighing about 50 to 65 pounds. However, crossbreeds with a smaller Poodle parent such as a Miniature Poodle produce a Labradoodle that is much smaller and typically stands between 16 to 21 inches in height and weighs between 15 to 35 pounds.
Labradoodles are often known for their love of being in and around the water. Generally, they are very active and enjoy a good swim, especially when the opportunity presents itself. They are also natural retrievers and will likely take the opportunity to retrieve items that are thrown into the water. While there are still some Labradoodles that may not be as excited to get wet, most of them love to swim. With enough patience, enthusiasm, and practice, even the shyest of dogs can be encouraged to swim.
Labradoodles can make wonderful first-time pet owners as they are very loyal and affectionate companions. Their intelligence makes them easy to train and they tend to get along great with children and other household pets. They also have low-shedding coats, so any potential messes are kept to a minimum. Taking daily walks or playing fun, interactive activities with them can help reduce boredom and keep their energy level up, both important factors for first-time owners. With proper care and training, Labradoodles are sure to make excellent, loving first-time pet owners.
Training your Labradoodle starts with early socialization with other dogs, people, and animals. It is important to get your puppy off to a good start so that later training will be successful. To start, create a schedule for your Labradoodle that includes potty training, walks, and playtime. When teaching basic commands, such as sit, stay, and come, break down each step until your pup understands what to do. After these basic commands are mastered, you may want to look into specialty classes or agility training.
