Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a relatively new breed of dog, developed in the late 1980s. They are the progeny of Labrador Retrievers and Standard Poodles, combining some of the best traits of both breeds into one. Fun facts about Labradoodles include the fact that they are incredibly loyal and intelligent, making them an ideal pet for families with children. They are also hypoallergenic, shed little to no hair, and are relatively low maintenance.
Labradoodles are certainly known for being low shedding, and many believe that they are non-shedding. While this is not the case for all Labradoodles, some families find their Labradoodle does not shed, or sheds only lightly. With regular grooming and proper care, you can help keep shedding to a minimum. As all Labradoodles are hybrids with different parent breeds, you should always discuss the specific coat and shedding tendencies with the breeder. That will help you determine what kind of shedding you can expect with your Labradoodle.
Labradoodles are incredibly intelligent dogs who can benefit from a balanced diet. As such, owners should be mindful of what their furry friend should not eat. You should never feed Labradoodles chocolate, sweets, raisins, junk food, or any artificial sweeteners as these can cause serious health problems. Additionally, raw onions and garlic should be avoided as these can irritate their sensitive stomachs. Avoid onions, garlic, and large amounts of garlic powder as these can irritate their digestive systems.
Before getting a Labradoodle, some essential items to have on hand are a soft-bristle brush and a slicker brush for grooming purposes, chew toys and treats that are specifically for dogs, a comfortable dog bed, a collar and leash, a durable food and water dish, and appropriate ease-in training materials. Depending on where you live, you may also need a bed cover to keep your Labradoodle warm and dry during colder months, a raincoat to keep it dry in wet weather, and boots to protect its feet from extreme temperatures.
Labradoodles are relatively large-sized dogs that typically grow to an average height of 22-24 inches and an average weight of 45-80 pounds. The coat can come in a wide variety of colors and textures depending on the parent breeds of the pup. Labradoodles are a mixed breed of Labrador Retriever and Poodle, so the size of an individual pup can vary from litter to litter. Generally, larger Labradoodles weigh more than smaller Labradoodles, but Labradoodles of any size can make wonderful pets.
The amount of daily exercise your Labradoodle needs will depend on their age and size. Generally, the smaller the breed, the less exercise they will need. Puppies need lots of playtime and should be taken out for a walk about twice per day. Adult Labradoodles require more intense exercise such as brisk walks, hikes, or runs. Adult Labradoodles should be taken out for an active walk of at least 30 minutes every day.
Labradoodles can make wonderful pets for first-time owners. They generally have mild temperaments, are loyal and loving, and can thrive with a bit of training and guidance. Labradoodles are easy to groom and their coats do not shed, making them a popular choice for those with allergies. Labradoodles require plenty of affection and consistent training. Engaging in play, frequent walks, and socialization are important steps to help them develop into well rounded companions.
Labradoodles are considered very intelligent dogs due to their crossbreeding of two highly intelligent breeds, the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. They are often easily trained and can learn commands and tricks quickly. Their heightened intelligence makes them very good companions for active owners, as they can join long walks or runs with minimal effort. Additionally, they will frequently respond to different commands, which can save owners time and energy. Labradoodles are also considered very observant dogs and have been known to remember and recognize faces, making them very good family dogs.
