Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a hybrid breed of dog created by crossing a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle; the result is a designer breed that combines the best attributes of both breeds. Typically, Labradoodles have the outgoing personality of a Labrador, a soft, wavy hypoallergenic coat of a Poodle, and a unique combination of intelligence, athleticism, and loyalty. With proper training and exercise, Labradoodles can fit into a variety of family settings or serve as an excellent working dog.
Labradoodles are considered to be a relatively hypoallergenic breed due to their Poodle heritage, meaning they have a lower risk of triggering allergic reactions among humans. However, even Labradoodles may produce allergens that could trigger an allergic reaction in some people, so individuals who are concerned about allergic reactions should be aware of this possibility. While some Labradoodles may be low-shedding, every Labradoodle is different and individual dogs can produce varying amounts of dander, which is the actual cause of an allergic reaction in humans.
Labradoodles enjoy a diet that provides all all necessary nutrients as they are considered "active and food-motivated" dogs. This includes lean proteins such as lean meats, poultry, eggs, and fish. Additionally, complex carbs such as brown rice, oats, and sweet potatoes are recommended. Vegetables and fruits are essential to further promoting a vibrant and healthy coat and providing necessary vitamins and minerals. It’s also important to avoid certain foods that may be toxic to dogs like onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, raisins, and macadamia nuts.
To prepare for your new Labradoodle, you should plan for plenty of exercise and playtime. Research the breed and learn what type of space it needs to comfortably remain active and be healthy. Preparing for the expense of food, toys, medical bills, and grooming is important, as well. Get familiar with leash walking and house training in advance as this will help your Labradoodle become accustomed to following rules and commands as soon as possible. Make sure to get the necessary supplies such as pet food, water and food bowls, a crate, a collar or harness, and ample toys.
Labradoodles typically range in size from Miniature, to Medium, to Standard. Generally, Miniature and Medium Labradoodles are considered to be medium-sized dogs while Standard Labradoodles are classified as large. Labradoodle size is typically determined by the size of the Labradoodle parent breeds. Since both the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle are breeds that can be relatively large in size, it is not uncommon for Labradoodles to be considered large.
Labradoodles are an intelligent and high-energy breed of dog that require plenty of physical and mental stimulation. The amount of daily exercise you give your Labradoodle will depend on their age, physical health, and overall activity level. Generally, it's recommended that an adult Labradoodle take between 60-90 minutes of exercise a day. That can be a combination of activities like long walks, run, tug games, swimming or other activities with your pup.
