Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are one of the most beloved companion animals today, and they're often renowned for being incredibly outgoing, affectionate, and intelligent. One of the most interesting things about Labradoodles is that they have a unique hybrid status, since they're bred from both a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. This means that they enjoy some of the best traits of both breeds, such as lowto no-shedding fur and a lowto no-dander coat, along with a friendly, family-oriented personality and a high level of intelligence.
Labradoodles are not non-shedding. They are considered to be low to non-shedding dogs, however they do shed a small amount of dander and hair. Their coat texture can vary depending on the generation of the Labradoodle, with F1 (50/50) coats tending to shed the most and later generations (F2b, F3, F4, etc) shedding less and less. Regular brushing and grooming to remove the loose hairs, as well as dietary supplements can help lessen the amount of hair that does shed.
Labradoodles are highly active dogs and their diet should provide enough protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to keep them healthy. The best food for your Labradoodle will depend on their age, weight, and lifestyle. Your veterinarian can help determine the right balance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients for your particular dog. Most pet food companies now offer specially-made Labradoodle food, which generally contains more animal proteins, healthy fats, fiber, and antioxidants than the standard store-bought variety.
Before you get a Labradoodle, it's important to make sure you have all the essentials: dog food, a leash, a collar, a bed, toys, grooming supplies, and plenty of treats. You'll also want to get a crate or kennel for the dog, and some belly bands if they are prone to marking in the house. Make sure to get plenty of chew toys and sturdy toys that won't get destroyed as quickly. You'll also need to look into doggie daycare and puppy classes for socialization and additional training.
The size of your Labradoodle puppy can vary depending on the breed of the parents, as Labradoodles are a hybrid. On average, a typical Labradoodle can range from miniature (13-16 inches tall and 15-25 pounds) to a large standard (23-26 inches tall and 50-65 pounds). While there is really no way to determine the size your Labradoodle puppy will ultimately become, anticipating their adult size can be done by taking into consideration the size of their parents.
Labradoodles are active and intelligent dogs who need plenty of exercise and stimulation in order to stay healthy both mentally and physically. While individual exercise needs may vary, as a general rule a Labradoodle needs at least two walks a day with a minimum of one hour of exercise each time to help get rid of excess energy and help keep their musculoskeletal system healthy. Depending on the age and size of the Labradoodle, additional activities such as agility, retrieve and obedience training can help provide them with the exercise they need.
Labradoodles have excellent personalities that make them an ideal family companion. With an intelligent, gentle nature, affection for people, outgoing attitude, and playfulness, Labradoodles mix the best qualities of the two parent breeds Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. They are active, loyal to their owners, and can be easily trained, making them an ideal dog for everyday activities like running around in the park or taking a short hike.
The amount of minutes per day that you should dedicate to training Labradoodles depends on a variety of factors, including the age of the dog, the breeds that are being trained, and the approach you are taking to the training. Generally speaking, Labradoodles can be trained in short intervals of three to five minutes, especially when they are younger and eager to learn. As they age, training sessions can increase in length, but it's important to keep them engaged and rewarding for maximum effectiveness.
