Questions & Answers
A Labradoodle is a designer hybrid breed of dog that is a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. It is a popular breed of dog due to its generally friendly, gentle, and intelligent nature. Labradoodles are energetic, loyal dogs that can range in size from small to medium-large, typically weighing anywhere between 15 to 45 pounds. Their coat can also range from short and curly to long and wiry and can be almost any color. Labsradoodles tend to have a low-shedding coat, though may still need regular grooming and haircuts.
Labradoodles come in a variety of coat types, with the two most common tiers being fleece and wool coats. Both are soft and dense, tend to be fairly low-shedding, non-allergenic coats, making them ideal for people with allergies. Labradoodle coats can vary widely from dog to dog, ranging anywhere from a flat, low-shed coat, known as an “English Retriever,” to a curly, full-bodied coat, to a wool-like coat with moisture-protecting insulation, or even a combination of the three.
Labradoodles are an incredibly smart breed that require special dietary needs, so you need to be mindful of what you feed them. It's important to not feed Labradoodles foods that contain artificial additives, such as preservatives, as these can lead to a variety of health issues in the long run. Additionally, avoid feeding them human snacks, such as chocolate, candy, and anything that is high in sugar as these can cause stomach issues. Processed or precooked meats should also be avoided; raw meats are best.
Labradoodles have some general requirements such as regular exercise, appropriate diet, and consistent training. They also have some special requirements such as plenty of socialization with both people and other animals and a non-shedding coat that will need regular grooming. They need to be brushed weekly with a slicker brush to keep their coat healthy and tangle-free and trimmed or shaved every 3-4 months depending on their activity level and the length of their coat. Labradoodles need regular dental care, heartworm prevention, and flea/tick prevention in order to maintain good health.
Labradoodles come in a variety of sizes. Depending on the lineage, Labradoodles can range anywhere from 10-25 inches tall for miniature breeds; as well as medium-sized Labradoodles that reach 20-25 inches in height; and standard-sized Labradoodles that span 22-24 inches in height. Labradoodles' weights can range from 10-90 pounds. Thus, there is quite a range of sizes and weights when it comes to Labradoodles making it so that there is a Labradoodle suitable for nearly everyone!
It is recommended that you walk your Labradoodle at least 30 minutes per day. This can include outdoor walks or playing in the yard, as long as your pup is getting some physical activity and mental stimulation. If your Labradoodle is very active, then consider walking him for a longer period of time. But make sure that whatever activity you do provide is within your pup’s capabilities. Keep in mind that more is not necessarily better. So it’s best to start small and gradually build up to a longer walk, if appropriate.
Labradoodles are an excellent choice for families with children, due to their friendly, affectionate nature. Their patience and playfulness make them a perfect fit for children, as they are loyal companions and willing to play endlessly while always being ready to cuddle. Labradoodles are also known for their intelligence, making them easier to train than other breeds and enabling them to learn basic commands quite quickly. As far as temperament goes, Labradoodles are gentle and rarely aggressive, which makes them ideal for families who are looking for a loving companion without any major behavioral issues.
