Labradoodles are a mix of two of the most popular family pets, Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. They are known for being low-shedding, non-allergenic, and generally easy to train. Labradoodles come in an array of coat types and sizes, from curly to straight and mini to standard. Additionally, these dogs possess a lot of energy and require daily exercise and mental stimulation. They are extremely intelligent and easily learn commands and tricks. Furthermore, Labradoodles are particularly friendly and are a great fit for families with children or other pets.
Labradoodles can be considered hypoallergenic, however it depends greatly on the lineage of the dog and how the parents were bred. A Labradoodle is a crossbreed between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, and not all Labradoodles are hypoallergenic. Generally, Labradoodles with a higher percentage of poodle in their gene pool tend to be more hypoallergenic than those with a higher percentage of Labrador Retriever.
Labradoodles should not be fed any type of food that contains a lot of salt, sugar, fat, or preservatives. Chocolate, onions, garlic, raisins, peaches, grapes, and other sweet fruits can all be hazardous to a Labradoodle's health. Carrots, celery, and other similarly hard vegetables should be avoided as they put pressure on the Labradoodle's already small jaw, possibly leading to significant discomfort. High-fiber foods, such as certain types of grains, can cause stomach issues.
To prepare your home for your new Labradoodle, it is important to puppy-proof your house by looking for any chewable items near the ground or lower level that should be safely removed and stored out of reach. Also, identify any hazardous items in the yard that your pup may get into (e.g., poisonous plants, chemical fertilizers, toxic insecticides, etc.) and move or remove them. Lastly, make sure that you have the appropriate food, toys, grooming supplies, and a comfortable place for your pup to sleep.
Labradoodle puppies come in various sizes, depending on the size of the parent dogs used in their breeding. Generally, generations that are more heavily toy poodle-based will be smaller, while those lineages that are more labrador based will be larger. The size that your Labradoodle puppy will reach fully adult size depends on the size of the parents, how much exercise and nutrition your pup receives, and how much he or she grows. Typically, you can expect most Labradoodles to reach between 14 and 25 inches in height and 17 and 65 pounds in weight.
It is recommended that you walk your Labradoodle for at least 30 minutes a day. This amount of exercise can help your pup stay physically fit, as well as help them expend their energy in a positive way. Also, walking your Labs will provide mental stimulation so as to help prevent boredom and destructive behavior. Ideally, you should split the daily exercise into two or three 15-minute walks. This can give your pup a break between exercise sessions. Keep in mind that young puppies may need less than 30 minutes of walk, sometimes as little as 10 minutes due to their lower energy levels.
Labradoodles are usually great with other pets and people. Most Labradoodles are friendly, sociable dogs that are more than happy to meet and play with other pets. They are also very obedient and willing to learn, so they can usually be trained to adapt well to living in a multi-pet household. Labradoodles often bond with animals outside of their own species and can be quite affectionate towards their furry housemates. They also require plenty of companionship, so living with another pet can be beneficial for both the Labradoodle and their companion.
Training a Labradoodle can be challenging, but ultimately rewarding. It is important to begin with basic commands such as 'sit' and 'let's go' as early as possible. Utilizing rewards such as treats, kind words, and even gentle scratches behind the ears can be effective tools to encourage appropriate behaviors. Be consistent with any rules set in your house, and offer a designated area to rest and relax. Establish appropriate boundaries to respectfully ensure that everyone – and not just the Labradoodle – abides by the same rules.
