Questions & Answers
A Labradoodle is a hybrid breed of dog that is a mix of the intelligence and trainability of a Labrador Retriever with the non-shedding coat of a Poodle. The result is a dog that is highly intelligent, affectionate, and easy to train, as well as being easy to groom due to its low-shedding tendency. Labradoodles are gentle animals that love to be around people, making them a great addition to active families who want to keep their house neat and free of hair.
Labradoodles, a mix between a Labrador Retriever and a Standard Poodle, vary in their degree of shedding. Some Labradoodles are non-shedding and some are low-shedding. Generally, the Labradoodle's curly coat will prevent the shedding of fur, which is why many people believe that Labradoodles are non-shedding. However, that isn't always the case, as Labradoodle coats can come in a variety of textures and thicknesses, leading to some shedding.
Labradoodles should be fed a nutritious diet to keep them healthy and active. High-quality, balanced dog foods are available that are specifically formulated for Labradoodles and their unique nutritional requirements. Dry food is the most common and easiest to use, but wet food can provide variety and vitamins, as well as added hydration. Treats should be given sparingly and should not exceed 10% of your Labradoodle's daily caloric intake. Be sure to only offer treats that are designed for canine consumption.
You can get your home ready for your new Labradoodle by creating a designated space for them. This space should be comfortable, free of clutter, and have access to some toys or chewable items. You should also provide them with a secure place that is ideal for sleeping such as a dog kennel or doggy bed. Consider blocking off sections of your home that Labradoodle may not be allowed in. Make sure that all of your household plants, food items, and medicines are out of reach of your Labradoodle.
Labradoodles come in a variety of sizes. Depending on the breeder, they usually range from extra small or toy, at around 14" tall, to medium, at around 21" tall, and standard, which is the largest size at around 24" tall. The most popular size for Labradoodles is the medium, as it strikes a balance between being a good size for a pet and still small enough for a family home.
The amount of time you should walk your Labradoodle will depend on the individual dog's health, age, and activity level. In general, your Labradoodle should be walking between 30 and 60 minutes per day, a few times a week. However, if you're aiming to keep your Labradoodle fit and healthy, you need to ensure that your daily walks are both regular and varied. During the walk, ensure the Labradoodle is given ample opportunity to exercise and receive mental stimuli to help prevent boredom.
Labradoodles are an excellent choice for first-time owners as long as the prospective owner is prepared to provide training, exercise, and socialization. Labradoodles are known for their intelligence, and as such, they benefit best from an effective disciplinary and affectionate approach. Labradoodles create strong bonds with their owners, and as such, they can be protective, loyal, and eager to please, making them ideal family companions. They can also serve as great watchdogs, with their guard-dog instincts, although they aren't usually aggressive.
There is no single answer as to how many minutes per day you should train a Labradoodle. The amount of time spent in training each day depends upon the individual dog, the owner’s goals, and the skill and experience of the trainer. Generally, most owners should plan to spend most of their training time outside of class exercises in practice, working on behaviors they already are comfortable with and adding new behaviors. Beginning owners with puppies should plan to spend even more time in practicing and refining new behaviors, as puppies require lots of repetition to learn new behaviors.
