Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are hybrids that are created by breeding a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. They are considered an "allergy-friendly" dog breed due to their low-shedding coats, and are often used as assistance, therapy, and even guide dogs. Labradoodles are popular companion pets and have a cheerful and patient disposition. They are energetic animals and require regular activity and exercise, and enjoy interacting with both humans and other animals.
The Labradoodle coat is unique in that it can vary based on the size of the dog and/or Poodle parent. Generally, Labradoodles have a soft, wavy, and sometimes frizzy coat that can be a bit fluffy in texture. Depending on the breed of the Poodle parent, the Labradoodle's coat will take on traits from either the Labrador Retriever or the Poodle. On the Labrador Retriever side, the coat can range from wavy and/or straight. On the Poodle side, the coat is usually thicker and more curly.
Labradoodles are typically fed a high quality, meat-based kibble that is designed for dogs. However, it's important to feed them the right quantity, and adjust their diet as they age. It's also important to speak with a veterinarian about any health concerns they may have that could affect their diet, such as allergies. Depending on age, size, and activity level, their daily intake may include a special blend of protein, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, and vitamins. Healthy treats, such as raw vegetables or fruits, can also be offered but should always be provided in moderation.
Labradoodles generally have the same requirements as any other breed of dog. Depending on the specific coat type of the Labradoodle, they will require regular brushing and, occasionally, grooming to keep their coat and skin in good condition. Exercise requirements will vary based on the individual Labradoodle some may require extensive exercise and activity while others may require less. Additionally, basic care needs such as proper nutrition, preventative care visits to the veterinarian, and routine dental care are necessary to keep your Labradoodle in good health.
Labradoodles, a mix between a Labrador and a Poodle, come in various sizes, so it is hard to definitively say that they are considered “big” dogs. Depending on the genetics, a Labradoodle can range in size from a small Standard size (21-23 inches, 50-65 lbs) to a more miniature size (14-16 inches, 15-25 lbs). In general, Labradoodles are somewhat larger than average size dogs, so they could be considered “big” based on this alone.
Labradoodles certainly enjoy the water! These designer dogs tend to be very active and playful, so swimming is a great activity to further exercise their bodies and keep their minds sharp. Swimming can help Labradoodles strengthen their muscles, expend some energy and learn to trust the water. Some Labradoodles may need a little encouragement when taking their first dip in the pool, but many will eventually learn that it's a fun and rewarding experience. With the addition of a life jacket and some treats, swimming can become a very enjoyable routine for both you and your Labradoodle.
Labradoodles are an increasingly popular breed of dog and can make an excellent pet for first-time owners. Labradoodles are a hybrid of Labrador Retriever and Poodle, and tend to be loyal, gentle and friendly. Their even temperaments make them very easy to train, and their outgoing personality generally makes them good with children and other animals. With proper training and socialization, Labradoodles can be welcome additions to any home. They are high energy dogs, so first-time owners should be prepared to give them plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.
Training a Labradoodle can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for the owner, but it does take commitment and consistency, and cannot be achieved overnight. Labradoodles are highly intelligent, and with the right guidance they can be easy to train. They can be willing participants in command-based training and respond well to positive reinforcement. At the same time, they can be sensitive and should never be subjected to harsh, punitive techniques. Patience, kindness, and consistency are essential for successful training of a Labradoodle, and it is important to remain consistent in both your expectations and approach.
