Questions & Answers
A Labradoodle is a mixed-breed dog developed as a companion and service dog hybrid. It is a combination of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, and seen by some as a designer breed. Labradoodles are typically low to non-shedding and because of the mix of the two breeds are said to combine the best attributes of the two breeds. Labradoodles come in three standard sizes: standard, miniature, and medium.
Labradoodles can potentially cause allergies in some people, as they are a relatively new hybrid breed that can inherit allergy-inducing traits from either parent. While Labradoodles are typically considered to be hypoallergenic, due to their low-shedding coat, no breed is 100% non-allergenic. There is still a possibility of experiencing an allergic reaction due to the other factors involved in owning a Labradoodle, such as the saliva, dander, and urine that can produce an allergic reaction in some individuals.
Labradoodles are incredibly intelligent, playful and loyal dogs, but they can also be prone to digestive problems if they are not fed the proper diet. Therefore, it is important to be aware of what you should and should not feed your Labradoodle. It is best to avoid giving your Labradoodle table scraps, excessively fatty treats, or any type of chocolate or candy. These foods are not only unhealthy for your Labradoodle, but could lead to potential health problems.
Before getting a Labradoodle, be sure to stock up on some essentials! Dog food, treats, a collar and leash, training pads, a bed, food and water bowls, a groomers brush, a good quality shampoo, nail clippers, a toothbrush, toys, and other tools such as a pooper scooper. You may also want to invest in a crate for housebreaking and safety, as well as puppy proof your home. Make sure to line up a trusted vet for regular checkups.
Labradoodles can vary in size depending on their parents' size. Labradoodles typically range in height from about 14-24 inches and can weigh between 15-65 pounds. It's possible for some Labradoodles to be smaller or larger than this range. Generally, the size of a Labradoodle is determined by the size of the Poodle parent. If the Poodle parent is a Standard size, the Labradoodle is likely to be slightly larger. Conversely, if the Poodle is a Miniature, the Labradoodle is likely to be smaller.
Absolutely! Taking your Labradoodle for a run can be a great way to get exercise for the both of you. It's important to remember that Labradoodles are an active breed and require plenty of daily exercise as they can become bored easily. Be sure to start out gradually and increase distances as the dog's stamina builds; paying close attention to the Labradoodle's condition before, during, and after the run. As with any running activity, check with a veterinarian first and make sure they are up-to-date on all vaccinations and flea/tick treatments needed.
Labradoodles are typically very friendly and can get along well with other pets in most households. That being said, it's important to remember that each individual Labradoodle has its own personality, so it's important to socialize your Labradoodle puppy as early as possible and ensure that they are exposed to a variety of people, animals, new situations, and noises so they can learn how to interact with people, animals, and new environments. Additionally, it's a good idea to introduce your new pet gradually to existing pets, taking care to do it in a calm and controlled environment.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training your Labradoodle each day will depend on a number of factors, including the age and experience level of your pup. A general guideline to follow is that for the first 6 months after a puppy is brought home, it's important to spend at least 15 minutes per day on some form of basic obedience training. As your dog's skills advance, you can gradually increase the amount of daily training to 40-50 minutes per day.
