Labradoodles are an amazingly unique breed due to their hybrid ancestry that combines the quirky intelligence of a poodle with the devoted loyalty of a Labrador Retriever. Not only are they popular family pets, but they are also great therapy dogs. Fun facts about Labradoodles include their origin as a designer breed in Australia, their low-shedding coats that come in a variety of colors, and their intelligence which allows them to be easily trained. Further enhancing their intelligence is their willingness to please, making them super easy to work with.
Labradoodles are a unique breed of dog that have a wide range of coat characteristics. Generally, Labradoodles have a coat that is soft and silky, with a wavy to curly texture. Depending on the family of Labradoodle, their coats can differ in length, texture, colors, and even a single Labradoodle may have a combination of different coat characteristics. Some coats are short and dense and others are longer and more wavy or curly. Color combinations can also have a mix of cream, white, red, brown, black, and even apricot.
Labradoodles should not be fed chocolate, caffeine, candy, or anything else containing the sweetener xylitol. Other human food scraps such as table scraps, potato chips, and greasy bacon should also be avoided. Certain human food, like onions, garlic, and certain nuts, can be toxic to pets and should never be fed to Labradoodles. Raw or undercooked meats, poultry, or fish are also not recommended, as they may contain bacteria that can make your pet sick. Milk and milk byproducts such as cheese can also cause digestive upset.
Labradoodles can require additional grooming, vet care, and exercises dependent on their individual traits. As Doodle mixes, they generally require more attention than other breeds. Weekly brushing is recommended to prevent mats and tangles in their curly coats. Keeping Labradoodles on a healthy diet and providing regular exercise is essential. Since Labradoodle coats can be unpredictable or high maintenance, they may occasionally require professional grooming, especially if the fur is extremely wiry or thick.
Labradoodles, which are a cross between Labrador Retrievers and Poodles, generally range in size depending on the mix between the two breeds. Generally, Standard Labradoodles, which are the largest of the variety, can range anywhere from 21-24 inches for the male and 20-23 inches for the female. The Miniature Labradoodles, however, are much smaller and reach a maximum of 15-17 inches for the male and 14-16 inches for the female.
