Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are hybrid dogs that are part Labrador Retriever and part Poodle. These smart, friendly, and social dogs usually require a moderate amount of exercise and come in a variety of sizes, making them a great pet for apartment living. They're also a great choice for families with small children and other pets since they're so gentle and loving. Labradoodles are known for their intelligence and their ability to learn quickly. With proper training, they are an easy breed to manage. Many owners enjoy showing and competing in dog shows with their Labradoodles as well.
Labradoodles can be low-shedding depending on the lineage of the dog. It is typically a crossbreed between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, and the coat type and texture can vary depending on which type of Poodle is used and other genes in the hybrid. If a Labradoodle is bred for non-shedding, it is often referred to as a ‘hair’ Labradoodle, and will have a tightly curled coat.
Labradoodles have specially formulated dietary needs since they are a combination of Labradors and Poodles. Generally, Labradoodles require high-quality, high-energy food that is protein-rich to meet their higher activity levels. It should also be richer in fiber and added vitamins and minerals to help with some of their genetic health issues like hip dysplasia and eye conditions. The food should also have a balance of complex carbohydrates, amino acids, and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for a healthy skin and coat.
Labradoodles vary in their specific needs, depending on their size and temperament. Generally, however, they require regular haircuts, brushing and frequent exercise. Additionally, Labradoodles need to be trained in basic obedience and socialization from an early age, including housebreaking. As a social breed, they need daily human companionship and interactions. Labradoodles can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time, so it is a good idea to train them early to cope with brief periods of time away from their human family.
Labradoodles can range in size depending on which of its two parent breeds—the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle—it takes after more. On average, they typically weigh anywhere from 10-70 pounds though there have been reports of Labradoodles as small as 3-4 pounds. Generally speaking, Labradoodles less than or equal to 15-20 pounds are considered small, but it is ultimately up to the individual owner's perspective and what they consider their pet's appropriate size to be.
Labradoodles can be very active dogs, depending on their genetics and upbringing. They were initially bred as a cross of a Labrador and a Poodle, both of which are fairly energetic breeds. On average Labradoodles require between an hour to an hour and a half of activity daily. This can be anything from running and playing to long walks. Labradoodles tend to be naturally social, highly trainable, and very affectionate breeds, making them a good choice for an active family that likes to remain active themselves.
Labradoodles are incredibly friendly and sociable breeds, with a natural buffering toward children. As such, they tend to get along well with kids and make great family pets. They are energetic and loyal companions, who enjoy playing outdoors and can tolerate kids' roughhousing and attention. Labradoodles are intelligent and easily trainable, so owners can be extra cautious to ensure that their pet remains respectful and maintains good behavior around people. Additionally, as a hybrid breed, they tend to have fewer health problems and may often be less prone to allergies than other breeds.
The right amount of time you should spend training Labradoodles depends on the stage and age of the dog, as well as the amount of training experience you (or the trainer) have. Generally, Labradoodles should receive training exercises multiple times per day, adding up to at least an hour or more total.
