Labradoodles are a hybrid breed of dog, developed in Australia in the 1980s as an allergy-friendly family pet. One of the most interesting things about these dogs is their intelligence: Labradoodles have inherited the smart, trainable nature of both the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle, making them highly responsive and obedient. Besides their intelligence, Labradoodles are known for their friendly, outgoing demeanors, making them excellent family dogs. They also have a low shedding double coat, which makes them ideal for pet owners with allergies.
Labradoodles have low to minimal shedding due to their unique genetic structure. The two breeds that make up the Labradoodle, the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle, both have coats that don't shed heavily. As a result, Labradoodles rarely shed hairs, and even when they do, the coat will not become heavily matted. A Labradoodle's coat requires regular brushing and grooming to keep it looking and feeling its best, but this little amount of maintenance is well worth it for those that seek a non-shedding pet.
Labradoodles can have sensitive stomachs and should not be fed certain human foods. Uncooked garlic, onions, alcohol, fatty scraps, macadamia nuts, and avocados should not be fed to Labradoodles. Additionally, chocolate, candy, gum, and sugarless products containing xylitol should never be given to Labradoodles as these can be fatal. It is important to check with a veterinarian about which foods are acceptable for Labradoodles.
Before bringing a Labradoodle into your home, it's important to make sure that you have the essential items needed for them. First, make sure you have a leash and collar for walking and identification. You should also have a crate or kennel to help crate-train your Labradoodle for times when they need to be kept safe. Additionally, you will need bowls for both food and water and a selection of toys and treats for playtime and rewards.
Labradoodles can be considered small dogs depending on their size and weight. Generally, Labradoodles are medium to large-sized dogs, typically weighing anywhere between 40 to 65 pounds. However, some Labradoodle breeders are now creating smaller Labradoodles, typically referred to as "Miniature Labradoodles" or "Toy Labradoodles," which can weigh as little as 10 to 24 pounds.
Labradoodles are an active breed and require exercising in order to remain physically and mentally healthy. Depending on the dog's age and physical shape, generally, Labradoodles need around 30-60 minutes of exercise per day. There are a wide variety of activities for Labradoodles that provide different levels of physical and mental stimulation. On walks, they can be taken to off-leash dog parks, encouraged to sniff and explore, and given time to doze and relax.
