Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a fairly new designer breed, created by combining a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle to create an intelligent, friendly, and loyal pet. Generally, Labradoodles are good-natured, making them great for families; they tend to be outgoing and adapt easily to new surroundings. They are usually low-shedding because of their Poodle genes, making them a good choice for allergy sufferers. Training Labradoodles can be easy but housebreaking may take some patience. Proper nutrition and exercise are important for these active dogs.
Labradoodles are a hybrid breed created from the crossing of Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. As such, Labradoodles can range from high shedding to low shedding. In general, Labradoodles that are 3/4 Poodle and 1/4 Labrador are considered a low shedding breed. The fur texture of the Labradoodle can vary depending on its parents, but it is typically wavy to curly, creating a ‘teddy bear’ look. Accordingly, the tightness of the curl helps to decrease shedding.
Labradoodles are known for being intelligent, loving, and loyal family pets. As with any pet, it's important to provide them with the best nutrition and avoid things that could cause them harm. Generally, Labradoodles should not be fed table scraps, chocolate, avocados, grapes/raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, or any other foods that are toxic to dogs. They should also avoid any bones, especially cooked bones, that could hide splinters and cause a choking hazard.
It is important to prepare for your new Labradoodle by making sure your home is safe and suitable for your pup. Begin by puppy-proofing the house: be sure to store away any hazardous materials such as medicines, secure any accessible cords to prevent tripping and/or choking hazards, and double check that all windows and other openings are safe and blocked off. Additionally, buy everything necessary for your pup such as food, bowls, bedding, toys, treats, leash and collar, and a crate.
The size of your Labradoodle puppy will depend on several factors, including their heritage (whether they are a Standard, Miniature, or Toy Labradoodle) and their gender (Males tend to weigh more than Females). In general, full-sized Standard Labradoodles may reach heights of 24 to 26 inches at adulthood and weigh 45 to 70 pounds, while Miniature Labradoodles generally reach 15 to 17 inches and weigh 18 to 40 pounds. Toy Labradoodles are the smallest variety, weighing up to 12 pounds and standing 12-14 inches tall.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. How much exercise your Labradoodle needs depends on its age, breed and overall health. Puppies younger than six months old should not be walked for more than 5-10 minutes at a time, several times a day, while older dogs require more vigorous exercise. Also, take into consideration the climate you live in and the temperature outside when exercising your Labradoodle.
Labradoodles can make wonderful pets for first-time owners. As they are a hybrid breed, the temperament, activity level, size, and many other qualities may differ from dog to dog, but many of them tend to be friendly, intelligent, and eager to please their owners, making them relatively easy to train and manage. Further, their sizes vary depending on whether you go for a miniature or Toy Labradoodle, or a Standard Labradoodle. Smaller varieties are usually better for even novice owners as they require less exercise and space.
Labradoodles are considered to be a highly intelligent breed of dog. These designer pups, created by crossing Labrador Retrievers with Poodle mutts, boast a playful, affectionate, and devoted temperament. Not only do they get along well with children and adults, but they are known for being a highly intelligent breed that is quick to learn. With enough training, they can learn to recognize and respond to voice commands and hand signals, which makes them excellent working and service dogs.
