Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a designer hybrid breed of dog, crossing a purebred Labrador Dad and a purebred Poodle Mom. Labradoodles are typically classified as Non-Sporting dogs since they are not recognized as an AKC breed due to being a hybrid mix. Labradoodles range in size and coat type depending on their genealogy, but they are all generally friendly, intelligent, and highly trainable. Labradoodles also tend to be hypoallergenic which makes them a great choice for people with allergies.
Managing allergies with Labradoodles can be done in a few simple steps. First, it's important to thoroughly assess the situation. There are many allergy-friendly breeds available, and Labradoodles specifically are known for having minimal to no shedding. Secondly, it's suggested you bring the dog to the vet for testing and to determine any potential allergen sensitivities, as these can vary between individuals. Once the allergies have been identified, you can then proceed with steps to reduce the chances of flare-ups.
Labradoodles should never be given anything containing chocolate, as it can be poisonous to dogs. Other foods that are considered toxic to Labradoodles include onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, and anything made with sweetener like xylitol, which can cause serious problems like seizures and liver failure if ingested. Additionally, Labradoodles should never be given bones, whether cooked or raw, as they can splinter and cause stomach or intestinal issues.
Owning a Labradoodle requires being well-equipped with essential items to make sure that your dog is healthy, happy, and safe. Before getting a Labradoodle, you should have food and water dishes, age-appropriate toys, a bed or sleeping area, loose parts such as screws, and a chew/tug toy to keep the dog active. It’s also wise to have shampoo and conditioner, pet brushes, nail clippers, and ear cleaning solution.
Labradoodles can range in size from as small as 10 pounds to as large as 75 pounds. The size of Labradoodle will vary depending upon the type of Labradoodle bred, the genetic background of their parents, and other factors. Generally, Labradoodles bred from medium-sized Poodle parents will fall into the small to medium size range, while those bred from standard-sized Poodle parents can weigh in the range of 40 to 75 pounds. Mini-Labradoodles will typically weigh between 10 and 20 pounds.
Generally, Labradoodles need anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours of exercise daily, depending on age and energy level. As a rule of thumb, it's best to aim for at least a 30-minute walk each day. This allows them to get the necessary exercise and mental stimulation, as well as lets them explore and hone their hunting and retrieving skills as they sniff and chase things. Of course, more vigorous exercise and longer walks can also be beneficial if you have the time and the weather is conducive – a good way to tire them out.
Labradoodles are considered an excellent family pet, so it's no surprise that they tend to get along well with kids. They're known for their intelligence, laid-back personality, and friendly disposition. The crossbreed is loyal and affectionate, quick to learn commands and eager to please. Labradoodles have an enthusiasm for life and tend to embrace change and excitement; both of which children bring. With proper socialization, you can expect them to become great playmates while respecting boundaries and demonstrating patience with children.
Training a Labradoodle can be an easy process, depending on how much time you're willing to dedicate to reinforcing the lessons you teach your pup. There are lots of resources available that provide tips and guidance, along with professional dog trainers who can help you learn the secret to success when it comes to teaching obedience to your Labradoodle. If you have the patience and dedication, then your Labradoodle can learn commands quickly with consistent and positive reinforcement. Set aside specific times for training and don't forget to end each session with lots of praise.
