Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a cross between two beloved breeds, Labrador Retrievers and Poodles, making them a special hybrid class of dog. They are loyal, intelligent, active, and highly trainable companions, and absolutely make a wonderful pet. The best part about Labradoodles is that they can feature either the Lab's friendly, laid-back temperament or the Poodle's goofy, playful persona, or even a combination of both.
Labradoodles typically have medium to long, slightly wavy coats. Sometimes they may be fleecy or wiry in texture and their coats have a natural shine to them. Generally, these coats do not shed, or they shed very little, making them a great choice for individuals wanting a pet that doesn't require lots of grooming, brushing and vacuuming. While they do require some brushing to stay healthy and clean, Labradoodle coats also require regular bathing. Labradoodle coats also have the potential for a variety of colours and sometimes possess a unique pattern.
Feeding your Labradoodle depends on their age and activity level. Puppies should be fed 3-4 times a day, while older Labradoodles may only require two meals a day. A good rule of thumb is to offer your pup two-thirds of their daily caloric intake in the morning and one-third in the evening. You should also use high-quality dry food specifically designed for Labrador Retrievers, as they have high levels of energy and require additional nutrients. Make sure to avoid buy food with low-quality fillers, such as corn and wheat.
Preparing your home for a Labradoodle is a relatively easy process that can be done quickly if you plan ahead. Make sure to puppy-proof your home: pick up any small objects that could be a choking hazard, cover up any exposed electricity outlets, and relocate items that could be chewed or scratched. Create a designated space for your Labradoodle to rest, where they can relax and get comfortable; provide a comfortable bed, and play and chew toys. Feeding your Labradoodle healthy foods is important; establish meal times for consistency and use high-quality dog food.
The size of a fully grown Labradoodle can vary depending on their bloodline and genetic traits. Generally speaking, Labradoodles usually weigh in between 10-24kg (25-60 lbs) when fully grown and can reach heights of 30-45cm (12-18 inches). This range can vary based on the size of the parent Labradoodles and if the puppy has a mixed genetics with other breeds. For this reason, it's impossible to accurately predict the exact sizing of your Labradoodle puppy.
Absolutely! Taking your Labradoodle running can be a great way to get some exercise and spend quality time together. Depending on their age, make sure to check with your vet to make sure your pup is up for the challenge. There are many factors to consider such as age, temperature, terrain and duration. It's important to gradually build up the intensity of your running practice to ensure your dog's overall health, safety and wellbeing. You may also want to look into investing in a hands-free leash to ensure full safety and control of your pup.
Absolutely! Labradoodles are a friendly breed which typically get along very well with children. As with any breed of dog it’s important to train them properly and maintain good socialization skills early on, making sure that all members of the household understand the proper way to interact with the Labradoodle. When properly trained and given lots of love and attention, Labradoodles make wonderful pets for children. They are also known for being trainable and eager to please, making it easy to teach them positive behaviors.
The amount of daily training required for Labradoodles depends on a few factors. Age, attention span and level of energy are a few of the things that need to be taken into account. Generally, Labradoodles benefit from at least 30 minutes of structured training activities per day. This should include basic behavior commands like sit, stay, come and leave it. Since Labradoodles can be quite rambunctious and excitable, additional activities (such as lengthy walks or obedience classes) are beneficial for burning off excess energy.
