Questions & Answers
A Labradoodle is a hybrid or designer dog that is a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. A Labradoodle is known for its intelligence, loyalty, social nature, and its low-shedding, hypoallergenic coat that requires weekly brushing and occasional trimming. Labradoodles come in three sizes, ranging from 14-24 inches and 25-60 pounds. Most Labradoodles have a characteristic bouncy gait, which is a combination of Labrador and Poodle gaits.
Labradoodles are generally considered to be a hypoallergenic breed of dog, meaning they produce very little dander (dead skin particles that can cause allergic reactions). This doesn't guarantee that there will be no potential for allergy issues, as some individuals with allergies can be sensitive to other substances that a Labradoodle may produce, such as saliva or urine. As such, the best way to determine if a Labradoodle will cause you to have allergies is to do a patch test.
Labradoodles should never be fed chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, persimmons, or large amounts of dairy products. As with any dog breed, human food should always be avoided, as it can be unhealthy and unsafe. Labradoodles should also stay away from avocado, raw eggs or fish, raw meat, and sugar-free foods or drinks that contain xylitol. It's best to stick with healthy, specially formulated dog foods that are high quality and contain no artificial preservatives, additives, or coloring.
To ensure a smooth transition for your new Labradoodle, it's important to begin preparing your home in advance. Invest in some sturdy and comfortable dog beds that you can place in optimal areas throughout your house for your pup to rest between playtime. Additionally, make sure to pick up some chew toys that will help your puppy to expend their energy. It's also important to research common puppy-proofing methods to help keep your pup away from any dangerous items in your house.
The exact size of your Labradoodle puppy can vary considerably depending on lineage and parental size. Generally, you can expect your Labradoodle puppy to reach a mature weight of anywhere from 15 to 70 pounds depending on the size of the parents. Labradoodles come in four sizes: Standard, Medium, Miniature, and Toy. The Standard size has parents with an average weight of 45 pounds or greater. Medium Labradoodles typically have parents that weigh between 19-34 pounds. Miniature Labradoodles have parents who weigh an average of 15-17 pounds.
Absolutely you can take your Labradoodle running! If you plan to do so, there are a few factors to consider. Make sure your Labradoodle is a good age and physical condition; puppies and Dogs that are not used to hard exercise should not take part in rigorous physical activities. You will also want to plan your route in advance so that your canine companion can stick to paved paths and not venture into muddy or otherwise unsteady terrain. Always bring along plenty of snacks and water to keep your pup energized and hydrated while on the go.
Labradoodles make excellent family dogs, due to their loyal, friendly, and playful nature. They are highly intelligent and eager to please, so they can be easily trained and make good house animals. Labradoodles love human interaction and thrive on attention from people; they love to play games and go for walks, making them perfect for active families. Furthermore, this breed is quite social and is rarely aggressive. It is low-maintenance regarding grooming, and is non-shedding and hypoallergenic.
Training a Labradoodle can vary from easy to more challenging, depending on the size of your pup and their environment. Labradoodles are a smart and social breed that are blessed with a desire to please their owners, which helps the training process. It's important that you have patience and are consistent when training. Positive reinforcement techniques can be very helpful rewards for good behavior such as treats, praise, toys, or playing with your pup. It's beneficial to keep training sessions short and fun, and to repeat the same commands.
