Labradoodles are a designer breed, combining the Labrador Retriever with the Poodle. They typically have a low-to-non shedding coat, making them great for people with pet allergies, and they are known for being incredibly intelligent, devoted, and eager to please their owners. Labradoodles are loyal and wonderful with children, often succeeding in therapy and assistance work as well. They require a moderate amount of exercise and enjoy being an integral part of their human family. Labradoodles generally live 10-15 years and can stand between 17 and 25 inches tall.
Labradoodles are considered to be low-shedding and low-allergen dogs, but there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog. Labradoodles have a wavy or curly coat that is usually more allergy friendly than a typical shedding breed, however, no rare breed is 100% free from allergens. Allergens are shed from dander, saliva, and dead skin, not only from the fur, so some people may still find themselves to be allergic even with a low-shedding or low-allergen breed.
Labradoodles could potentially have special dietary needs, depending on the specific dog's health and lifestyle. Generally, however, they benefit from a diet that meets their nutritional needs and contains healthy, high-quality ingredients. Like many breeds, Labradoodle puppies may benefit from puppy formula designed specifically for their unique dietary needs. As adult dogs, the diet should be tailored to the individual Labradoodle and contain adequate levels of protein, fat, and carbohydrates to help keep them as healthy as possible.
Preparing your home for your new Labradoodle may seem daunting, but with the right preparation it can be enjoyable. First, set-up an escape-proof area with a safe and comfortable crate or puppy playpen. Its important to puppy-proof your home to keep all items accessible to your pet that may be hazardous. Make sure to remove any objects that may lead to choking. Make sure the area where they will sleep is warm, comfortable, and plenty of toys.
Labradoodles can range from about 18-22 inches tall and weigh between 30-60 pounds as adults. The size of Labradoodles is determined by the size of the parents; if the parents are both Standard size Labradoodles, the pup will be larger, while if one or both of the parents are Miniature size Labradoodles, the pup will be smaller. Some Labradoodles may be larger or smaller depending on the bloodlines of the parent dogs.
Generally speaking, an adult Labradoodle should walk at least 30-60 minutes a day. It's important to tailor the amount of time based on the individual Labradoodle's age, weight, and overall health. Puppies should walk no more than 15 minutes at a time, but can typically handle two or three fifteen minute walks per day. As your Labradoodle grows and becomes more active, you can gradually increase the length of time and the amount of walks per day.
