Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a designer breed that is a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. They are classified in the Sporting Group. These dogs have become popular pets due to their intelligence, loyalty, and sociability as well as their hypoallergenic coat. They usually have a pleasant and loving disposition and are often considered great companion dogs. Labradoodles come in a variety of coat colors and textures, ranging from curly to wavy. The size of the dog will depend on which types of Labrador Retriever and Poodle are used for breeding.
Labradoodle coats can vary greatly depending on the specific breed. Typically, the coat is curly or wavy, and can range from a light or coarse texture—with a variety of colors, ranging from white, black, brown, and any combination of the three. The length of the coat is usually medium-length, but some Labradoodle mixes can have short, long, and wavy coats. Some Labradoodle owners trim their pet’s coat to the desired length.
Labradoodles should not be fed anything that is high in fat or sugar such as processed food, table scraps, or candy. It's also important to avoid feeding Labradoodles anything with artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. It's also best to avoid feeding Labradoodles anything that contains too much salt, like chips, as it can cause sodium poisoning. Raw meat, bones, and uncooked fish are also not suitable for Labradoodles for a variety of reasons.
Preparing your home for your new Labradoodle requires more than just scooping out space in your closet for their food and accessories. To ensure that they will be comfortable and safe in their new space, be sure to puppy-proof your home. Hide or cover any electrical wires, put away any hazardous chemicals, block off any rooms you don't want them to go into, and make sure that anything breakable or toxic is out of reach. Set aside an area of your house as their designated spot for their bed, toys, and crate.
Labradoodles are considered a medium-sized breed and can reach sizes anywhere between 21 and 24 inches tall, weighing up to 65 pounds, but usually remaining between 10 and 30 pounds. As a hybrid breed they can have unpredictable genetic blends, so there is no guarantee how large or small a mature Labradoodle will be. Labradoodles can also be a combination of toy, miniature and standard sizes.
Labradoodles are active, athletic dogs with a lot of energy that they need to burn in order to stay healthy. It is recommended that they get at least 60 minutes of exercise every day, consisting of walking, jogging, running, swimming, and other forms of activity. It is important to also get in some play time with a toy, as this can stimulate their minds. Mental stimulation and exercise are important for this breed's wellbeing. Regularly taking your Labradoodle for a walk or to the dog park can provide them with the stimulation they need to stay healthy and happy.
Labradoodles are naturally friendly and docile, making them generally good with children of all ages. This smooth-haired designer breed is very intelligent and eager to please their owners, making them a great companion for families with young kids. On top of being gentle and loving, Labradoodles are also known for having a fondness for cuddling and attention. For those reasons, Labradoodles make wonderful pets for households with kids.
Training a Labradoodle is not difficult, but it does require patience and consistency. Start by familiarizing your pup with basic commands such as 'Sit', 'Down', and 'Stay'. Positive reinforcement is the best way to train a Labradoodle, so be sure to reward your pup with treats or verbal praise when he follows your command. Make sure to give commands in a firm but friendly tone. As your pup learns the commands, gradually increase the difficulty of the tasks you ask him to perform. Set up practice exercises, and keep training sessions fun and interactive.
