Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a unique hybrid breed of dog, resulting from a cross between a Poodle and Labrador Retriever. They are considered to be among the most intelligent of all dog breeds. They are hypoallergenic, meaning they rarely shed or cause allergies, yet their coats are soft, wavy, and even curlier than the average Poodle's coat. Moreover, they're also incredibly loyal, energetic, and outgoing, making them a perfect match for any family.
Labradoodles can cause allergies, however, it really depends on your individual sensitivity to allergens. If you are allergic to pet dander or pet hair, a Labradoodle may not be the best breed of dog for you. Breeds with wool coats tend to leave less allergens, so a short-haired, hypoallergenic dog may be more suitable. In addition, if you have a mild allergy to dander, daily grooming and frequent bathing of the dog can help minimize symptoms.
Labradoodles should not be fed human food, as it can upset the delicate balance of nutrients in their diet, which can cause health problems. It is also recommended to not feed Labradoodles products or treats made with xylitol, as this can be toxic for them. Additionally, Labradoodles should not be given bones—cooked or otherwise—as they can be a choking hazard or cause digestive irritations. Furthermore, Labradoodles should not be fed seafood, dairy, or nuts, as they can lead to digestive problems and sensitivities.
Before getting a Labradoodle, you should make sure you have all the essential supplies you need for their care. Dog food, food and water bowls, a leash, a collar, a cage or crate, poop bags, nail clippers, and toys are all key items. You may also want to consider treats, a grooming kit, a pet bed, a slicker brush, shampoo, and a toothbrush.
Labradoodle puppies can vary greatly in size, depending on the mix of parent breeds. Certain Labradoodles may have a more Poodle-like build, while others may be much larger. Generally speaking, Labradoodles tend to grow to be in the region of 20 to 24 inches tall, and can weigh anywhere between 20 and 70 pounds, give or take. To give you an idea of size, a puppy that is 30-50 pounds is likely to be considered a medium-sized dog when fully grown.
Labradoodles are exceptionally active dogs, often requiring a lot more exercise than other breeds. They are known for their enthusiasm and can be quite overy and excitable. This means they require regular stimulation and activity throughout the day, so they are best suited to families who can meet their daily activity needs or those who are looking for a running or hiking partner. Labradoodles need a good amount of mental and physical stimulation, so it is important to provide them with plenty of opportunity to explore and keep active.
Labradoodles can be wonderful family pets because of their positive attitude and people-oriented personalities. Generally, Labradoodles get along well with kids, as they can be incredibly gentle, playful, and affectionate. Because of their intelligence and trainability, Labradoodles can easily learn and adhere to important commands and rules around children. A Labradoodle's love and consistent presence can provide both company and security to kids of all ages. Additionally, their good nature and eagerness to please their owners often makes them patient with the sometimes unwarranted attention of children.
Training a Labradoodle is not necessarily easy, but it can be manageable. Depending on the individual pup, their size, and their maturity level, the process may be akin to a roller coaster. As with all dogs, a Labradoodle needs exercise, routine, direction, and affection, so it is important to be consistent and persistent when it comes to training. Start with basic commands like 'sit' and 'come' and progress as your pup shows signs of development and responding to your commands. Patience is key, and rewarding your pup for obedience and successes in training is important.
