Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a type of designer dog, created by crossing a Labradore Retriever with a Poodle. They are known to be intelligent, social, and friendly dogs; with an innate sense of humor, they often create endearing moments of fun and laughter. They do best when they receive regular and consistent training and exercise. To maintain their health, a Labradoodle needs regular grooming. They should also have their nails trimmed and ears checked for infection regularly. They often get along well with other animals, including cats, and they make wonderful companions for children.
Labradoodles do not inherently cause allergies, although the individual traits of the breed can determine if they will affect someone with allergies. Generally, Labradoodles are considered to be hypoallergenic due to their low-dander, non-shedding coats which contain a intermix of Poodle and Labrador Retriever coat genetics. That being said, the possible dander associated with Labradoodles may vary depending on the coat type and the variability in individual allergies can cause unique reactions for different people.
Labradoodles should not be fed human food, as it can potentially be harmful to them. Foods and snacks high in carbohydrates, such as potato chips, popcorn, and pretzels, can not only lead to weight gain in your pup, but can also cause digestive problems. Foods that contain the artificial sweetener xylitol, such as chewing gum or baked goods, can be dangerous as xylitol is toxic to dogs. Other foods to avoid are grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and chocolate.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Labradoodle starts with understanding the breed. Learn about the temperament of a Labradoodle and the socialization needs for your pet. Once armed with the knowledge, create a routine that meets the physical, mental, and emotional needs of your pup and stick to it as much as possible. Provide plenty of safe and stimulating activities and interactive games. Create an environment of positive reinforcement with consistency when it comes to training, and offer lots of mental and physical stimulation activities.
Labradoodles come in various sizes, ranging from miniature to large. The size you get will depend on the size of the parents, and their lineage (for example, an F2 Labradoodle will produce greater variety in size than an F1 Labradoodle). Typically, an F1 Labradoodle will range from 14-24 inches and 15-70lbs while an F2 Labradoodle may range from 12-28 inches and 15-90lbs. Toy Labradoodles may weigh as little as 8lbs, and there are also extra small Labradoodles.
Labradoodles are an active breed of dog and make great companions for those who enjoy outdoor activities. Their intelligence and eagerness to please makes them very responsive to training and makes them a great choice for exercise partners. They are vigorous and bouncy and do require regular and consistent physical activity to maintain a healthy and happy disposition. These lively pups need plenty of outdoor playtime to tire them out, and an experienced and patient owner to help them channel their energy into productive activities.
Labradoodles are a great choice for families with children as they are typically gentle, affectionate, and highly trainable. Furthermore, they have a high energy level, which means they do very well with kids who love to play. They are extremely social and have an inherent tendency to form strong bonds with their owners as well as anyone else in their families. With proper socialization and training, they should get along just fine with the kids in your house.
Training Labradoodles takes dedication, and the amount of time you should devote to it on a daily basis depends on your individual circumstances. If you are just starting to train your Labradoodle, you should probably plan to spend at least 30 minutes a day in order to teach basic commands. As you move on to more complicated behaviors, you may need to spend 45 minutes to an hour per day. If you are working with a professional trainer, the trainer may be able to provide a more detailed guide for how much time you should devote to training each day.
