Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, making them a hybrid breed. They come in a variety of sizes, and the most popular are usually medium-sized with a stout, athletic build and a soft, wavy coat. Labradoodles often have a wonderful temperament, being affectionate, loving, loyal, and highly intelligent. This makes them an ideal companion dog, able to fit into a variety of lifestyles.
Labradoodles are considered to be hypoallergenic dogs because of their unique combination of the poodle and Labrador Retriever genetics. The overall combination can make them better and more tolerable for people who have allergies. Characteristics that come from the Poodle help reduce dander production causing less of an allergic reaction. However, no dog breed is completely hypoallergenic. All dogs shed their coat and many do release dander and saliva that can cause an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to it.
Labradoodles of course have specific needs that should be taken into consideration when providing them with a proper diet. As with other dog breeds, Labradoodles should be given food specially formulated for their breed or a high-quality dog food that is appropriate for their age, size, and activity level. They may require more calories than an average breed due to their larger body and activity levels, but generally a Labradoodle diet should have lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Labradoodle begins with creating a predictable and positive environment for them to grow up in. Set boundaries and be consistent in sticking with them. Make sure you provide your Labradoodle with plenty of warmth and affection, as well as adequate exercise and mental stimulation. Spend quality time together, playing games and teaching them basic commands in order to promote good behaviors and discourage bad ones. Utilize positive reinforcement whenever possible, rewarding them for good behavior with treats, words of affirmation, and cuddles.
Labradoodles can range in size from very small (less than 14 inches) to very large (over 24 inches). The size of your Labradoodle will depend on its parent breeds and whether it is a miniature, medium, or standard Labradoodle. Generally, a miniature Labradoodle will grow to be about 14 to 16 inches tall and weigh 15 to 25 pounds. Medium Labradoodles are usually 17 to 20 inches tall and weigh around 30 to 45 pounds. Lastly, a standard Labradoodle can reach 21 to 24 inches in height and up to 72 pounds in weight.
Absolutely! Labradoodles, like most other dogs, are very active and love running and other forms of exercise. In fact, running with your Labradoodle can be an excellent way to get both physical and mental exercise at once. Running is a great way to socialize your pup and it can help them expend energy so they stay calmer indoors. However, it's important to consider your Labradoodle's age and breed before taking them running. Puppies or dogs with certain health considerations may not be able to handle long runs, so it's important to contact your veterinarian first.
Labradoodles typically demonstrate a great ability to get along with young children. They are gentle, loving, and loyal, and enjoy interacting with youngsters. Because of their natural protective instinct, they often display a gentle temperament and patience with child playmates. With proper training and socialization, Labradoodles make great family companions. Furthermore, they are a social breed, so they love to interact with people and be part of the family dynamic; which makes them a great addition to households with kids. They are non-aggressive and rarely bark.
Training a Labradoodle is generally quite straightforward. As they are considered a 'designer' breed, Labradoodles are highly intelligent and eager to please, which makes them prime candidates for easy training. However, of course consistency is key to any training program, and like any dog breed, the Labradoodle will require patience and dedication to attain the desired result. Furthermore, depending on the individual Labradoodle's temperament and ancestry, there may be some challenges to be aware of.
