Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a hybrid breed of dog created by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle. They are cheerful, friendly, and intelligent dogs and make excellent family companions and loyal service animals. Labradoodles are also incredibly trainable and can learn a wide range of commands and tricks. Their best features are their exceptionally low shedding coats that come in a variety of colors such as cream, black, chocolate, or apricot. They require weekly brushing and occasional professional grooming to maintain their coat and require regular exercise such as walks or runs with their owners.
Labradoodles do possess some shed, but are considered a low-shedding breed. Their coat type ranges from thick and wavy to thin and straight, with the varying factors determining the degree to which the breed will shed. While Labradoodles may not be completely non-shedding, they will typically produce far less hair than other, more traditionally hairy breeds. Regular and proper grooming will further help to reduce the amount of shed from the breed, as it helps to distribute the natural oils of the dog throughout its coat.
Labradoodles should not be fed anything that contains grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, excess salt, chocolate, macadamia, or moldy foods as these items can all be toxic and cause serious medical problems. Additionally, avoid feeding fatty or fried foods, large bones, raw dough, sugary treats, or processed foods as these items can all lead to obesity and cause gastrointestinal issues. Instead of a processed food diet, provide your Labradoodle with high-quality dry food that is rich in proteins, complex carbohydrates, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Preparing your home for a new Labradoodle is an exciting and important task. Start by puppy-proofing your home. Move any items that may be hazardous to puppies’ health such as electrical cords, sharp objects, and small shiny objects that can be swallowed. Also be sure to check for common household poisons and store them away safely. Make sure your Labradoodle has a comfortable place to sleep, whether that be a kennel or a cozy bed. Introduce your new pup to chew toys and puzzle games to avoid destruction of other items in your home.
Labradoodles are typically considered mid-sized to large dogs. Depending on their parent breeds, they may weigh anywhere between 25 and 80 pounds. In general, Labradoodles are sizeable and athletic but not overly large like a Mastiff or Great Dane. They are, however, still considered to be big enough to handle some of the tasks of bigger breeds like retrieving and pulling. Labradoodles also come with a medium to long coat, which can add some bulk to their look.
Labradoodles are generally active and cheerful dogs that love to explore the world around them. Their enthusiasm for life often extends to the water; many Labradoodles love to swim. The combination of their intelligent, friendly nature and the size and shape of a Labrador-Poodle mix makes them strong swimmers. This trait can be encouraged during early puppyhood with supervised swim sessions in a fenced-in pool, stream, or pond. Labradoodles could also benefit from regular aquatic exercise as they get older, either alone or accompanied by their favorite humans.
Labradoodles can be great pets to have in homes with other pets, as they have amiable and gentle personalities. As with all pets, it is important to introduce them gradually to one another under controlled and safe conditions. Having a Labradoodle get along with other animals largely depends on the Labradoodle itself. Some may be more welcoming of new additions to the family than others, while others may display behavior that indicates they are not comfortable in the presence of another pet.
Training a Labradoodle requires consistency and patience, but the effort is worthwhile. Firstly, begin by getting to know your pup better. Spend time getting familiar with its personality, habits, likes and dislikes. Once you have a good idea of your pup's behaviour, establish a set of rules and boundaries. Be sure to use simple language that your pup can understand. Enforce the same expectations consistently. Reward your pup with praise and treats for exhibiting desired behaviour. Structure their days with a regular schedule of feeding, exercising and playing.
