Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a hybrid breed of dog, developed by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle. They are considered to be part of the ‘designer’ dog category, and share characteristics with both parent breeds. Generally, Labradoodles are friendly, loyal, and intelligent, making them great family companions and therapy dogs. They typically weigh between 15 to 65 pounds, and have soft, curly coats which come in a wide variety of colours and textures.
Labradoodles can be categorized as low to non-shedding depending on their parent breeds. On average, their fur is shorter and less dense than traditional breeds, which helps minimize shedding. Additionally, the amount of shedding can also depend on the individual Labradoodle's coat expression and genetics. Many Labradoodles have wavy to curly coats that trap the hair follicles, causing them to shed less. Regular grooming can also help keep shedding under control.
Labradoodles should not be fed anything that contains a lot of sugar, caffeine, or alcohol as these would upset their delicate digestive systems. Additionally, Labradoodles should not be given human foods like chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chives, macadamia nuts, or anything else that contains a large amount of fat, salt, or artificial sweeteners. It's important to always read the ingredients before feeding your Labradoodle anything.
Labradoodles are unique animals with their own set of needs and requirements. Generally, they require all the basic maintenance needs that other dogs of their size would have, such as exercise, mental stimulation, clean water, and food. Additionally, Labradoodles often require a lot of grooming – they have a unique coat that mixes both poodle fur and Labrador Retriever fur, making them extremely soft, but also creating a need for more frequent brushing to keep the coat healthy and free of tangles. Without regular brushing, this coat can become matted.
Labradoodles come in a variety of sizes depending on the type of parent breeds used. A Toy Labradoodle is a cross between a Toy Poodle and a Labrador Retriever. It will usually weigh between 5 and 12 pounds and stands 8 to 14 inches tall. This is generally the smallest size available. A Miniature Labradoodle is bred from a Miniature Poodle and a Labrador Retriever. This size typically weighs 15 to 25 pounds and stands 14 to 16 inches tall. A Medium Labradoodle is the most popular size.
The amount of walking your Labradoodle needs each day depends on their age and overall health. Generally speaking, Labradoodles need 30-60 minutes of exercise each day. This should not come in one or two extended walks, but rather in a series of short walks broken up throughout the day. This will give your Labradoodle the opportunity to stay active and exercise their body while keeping their mind stimulated. You can also introduce activities such as play time in a fenced-off area or hiding toys somewhere in your yard for them to search for.
Yes, Labradoodles are great with kids. Generally speaking Labradoodles are gentle, affable companions that love to be around people, especially children. They will play with kids energetically and snuggle as much as kids will let them. The Labradoodle's intelligence, loyalty, and playfulness make them an excellent choice for children. Their devotion to their owners, ensures that they will take their role as protector seriously.
Training your Labradoodle should involve consistent, positive reinforcement techniques. Create a consistent structure for commands and rewards by setting aside specific times of day to practice. Utilize repetitive activities that will build a knowledge base and a strong connection with your dog. Praise your Labradoodle verbally for accomplishments and give small rewards of treats or physical affection as positive reinforcement for good behavior. Have a goal or task at each training session that will move towards the end result. Monitor the length of your Labradoodle's attention span and, if needed, break them into smaller sessions.
