Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a hybrid breed, created by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle. Originating in Australia in the 1980s, Labradoodles are intelligent, friendly, and easily trained, making them a popular breed for those seeking a companion or service dog. Labradoodles come in a variety of colors, including black, chocolate, cream, gold, and silver, and can be both long and short-haired. Average size typically ranges from 25 to 50 lbs and 16 to 24 inches tall.
Labradoodles are often described as non-shedding, but that may not be the whole story. While it is true that Labradoodles often have significantly lower shedding than most other dogs, they are not completely non-shedding. Labradoodle fur tends to be naturally thick and soft, which helps keep loose fur from flying around the house. Along with regular grooming, this can help minimize shedding. In addition to fur, Labradoodles may also shed small amounts of dander, which is mostly made up of dead skin cells.
Labradoodles should not be fed chocolate, candy, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, mushrooms, Macadamia nuts, alcohol, avocado, or any products containing the sweetener Xylitol. Dogs should not be fed large amounts of raw or undercooked eggs, meat, or fish as it can lead to food poisoning or parasite infections. The best rule of thumb is to give your Labradoodle healthy, high-quality dog food formulated for their age and activity levels, and beneficial supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids for their skin and coat.
The first step to preparing for your new Labradoodle is research. Educate yourself on the breed's needs by reading up on their dietary requirements, exercise needs, grooming routines, and any other pertinent information. Additionally, consider talking to other Labradoodle owners or breeders to gain intel on how to best care for your specific pup. Make sure your home is adequately prepared for a new pet by providing abundance of materials such as food, toys, treats, a soft bed, a leash, and a collar or harness. Finally, have a plan for teaching basic obedience and completing house-training.
Labradoodles can vary dramatically in size, depending on their parent breeds. Full-grown males can range from 21 to 24 inches in height and weigh anywhere from 50 to 65 pounds. Females, on the other hand, are generally a bit smaller, reaching an average height of 20 to 23 inches and a weight of 40 to 55 pounds. Even so, some Labradoodles may be larger or smaller than average. Additionally, some Labradoodles may be bred as miniature or toy varieties, which will naturally be much smaller.
Labradoodles are absolutely active dogs! Known for being an intelligent, friendly and energetic breed, Labradoodles love to be part of all of the family's activities. They are intelligent which makes them easy to train, so they can learn all kinds of activities and sports such as agility and flyball; they love having something to do. With enough exercise and the right nutrition, Labradoodles will thrive in an active lifestyle. Frequent walks and other activities, like playing with backyard games and swimming, will keep your Labradoodle healthy and happy.
Labradoodles make excellent family dogs as they have traits of both Labradors and Poodles, two intelligent, loyal breeds that are renowned for their sweet, loving, and affectionate temperaments. They are friendly and social dogs, making them an ideal fit for families with children. Labradoodles love attention and need plenty of playtime with the family. They are smart, learn quickly, and can obey commands. They are also incredibly playful and love to go on walks and hikes, spending quality time with their families.
Training a Labradoodle can be rewarding as well as challenging. With the right approach and positive reinforcement, Labradoodles can become well-behaved and obedient. It is important to teach them the basic commands such as sit and stay, as well as establish right behaviours for when they are in public. Training sessions should be kept short and make sure to reward them for doing the right thing. It helps to take the time to understand their behaviours and give your Labradoodle the proper amount of exercise and mental stimulation.
