One of the most interesting things about Labradoodles is their hybrid origins. As a cross between Labrador Retrievers and Poodles, these intelligent, low-shedding dogs display traits of both their parent breeds from the friendliness of the Labrador to the intelligence and low-shedding coat of the Poodle. The coat of a Labradoodle is especially unique, not only because the non-shedding coat is hypoallergenic, but because there can be quite a range of coat types, ranging from silky ringlets to coarse textures.
Labradoodles generally do not shed much, but they do shed. Their coats are considered to be hypoallergenic and much less likely to trigger allergies in individuals who are sensitive to pet dander. In fact, they have very loose, wavy hair that, when adequately groomed, doesn't shed as much as traditional breeds. While some Labradoodle owners may find that their puppy sheds more than others, most Labradoodles have a low shedding coat.
Labradoodles typically require a balanced diet that combines an appropriate mix of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. For optimal health, your Labradoodle should eat two adult-sized meals, at least 12 hours apart, consisting of a high-quality kibble specifically formulated for the breed. Additionally, some experts recommend supplements such as essential fatty acids, probiotics, and digestive enzymes, but consult your veterinarian before adding any to your Labradoodle’s diet.
Preparing your home for your new Labradoodle is easy! Start by purchasing items specific to Labradoodle needs, such as fuzzy toys, a chew toy, and a no-pull harness if your pup is a larger breed. Gather all the necessary supplies for house training your pup, such as puppy pads and plastic bags for cleaning up after your dog. You can also baby-proof your home by putting away dishes and hazardous objects in cabinets or closets and blocking access to off-limit areas.
Labradoodles come in a variety of sizes. Depending on the breeder, Labradoodles can come in three size categories: miniature (usually 10-15 inches tall and 15-30 pounds); medium (usually 15-20 inches tall and 30-45 pounds); and standard (usually over 20 inches tall and 45+ pounds). Though the size of a Labradoodle will depend on the ratio of Poodle to Labrador Retriever used in generations prior, any size can be bred and is usually affected by the environment (i.e. the amount of exercise provided).
Labradoodles often have the reputation of being highly active dogs that need loads of exercise and stimulation. In reality, while they can be quite energetic and boisterous when young, they tend to mellow out with age. All that said, they usually still need a good daily walk, as well as the chance to play, frolic and hunt around a securely fenced yard or dog park. Their intelligence also means that they benefit from things like agility training, obedience classes, and other mental stimulation.
